Introduction

Unterfranken (Lower Franconia) lies in the northwest of Bavaria, the area around Würzburg.

Stefan Schwoon, 8 October 2001

Description

The coat-of-arms of Unterfranken (since 9th November 1961) combines the Franconian "saw-tooth" with the symbols for Würzburg (standard) and Mainz (wheel). The unofficial flag is horizontally divided red-white with the arms in the center. Source: Linder 1997 which is available online at the Der Flaggenkurier website. Further information at the Bezirk Unterfranken website (only illustration of the arms).

More recently I obtained information from the Bezirk to clarify the question of how the flag actually looks like, especially if it is used as a normal horizontal flag or as a hanging flag (Banner). The flag is used as hanging flag (proportion 5:2). My image is based on a photo of an actual flag. Source: Letter from the Bezirk Unterfranken and a photo of the actual flag.
