Description of the flag

The flag of Voronez was adopted July 1997 and is red with blue vertical stripe at hoist (similar to the old russian republic flag).
Jaume Ollé, 1999.02.27

The coat of arms and the flag of Voronezh Region were adopted with Law #51-II-OZ on 1 of July, 1997 by the Duma (regional parliament) and signed by governor A.Goliusov on 7 of July Flag is red (2:3) with the coat of arms in the centre and blue stripe along the "base" of the flag. The width of the arms is equal to 2/5 of flag-length.

The description in the Law is very vague. I (russian) can’t understand this russian text! Usually russian vexillologist use the word "drevko" (hoist) or "kromka" (lower selvage). There is the word "osnovanie" (base) in the Law. What it means? May be two variants:

  • hoist part (the "base" to which the flag is strengthened)
  • lover selvage (more probably, because in heraldry "osnovanie" means the lover part of the shield)

The arms: Gules, a Pitcher in bend pouring out a Water Argent on a Mount Or. The shield is surmounted with a mural crown Or and an initial of Czar Peter I. The shield is surrounded with the oak-wreath Proper tied with a Ribbon Azure. The coat of arms is simlar to coat of arms of Voronezh Governorat (1878), but in that coat of arms the crown was imperial and oak-wreath was Or. The pitcher is the coat of arms of Voronezh (town) since 1781.
