Officially the oldest cossack army in Russia is Don army (founded 1570).

Description of the flag

The flag of Don Cossacks is a blue/yellow/red tricolour, which dates back to the flag of the “Omnipotent Don Army”. The colours stood for the Don, the Kalmyks and the Russians respectively.

Such flag was developed still ataman (cossack chieftain) Krasnov in 1918. Each colour symbolized the following: dark blue — colour of Don’s cossack, yellow — Kalmyks, which were included into structure of Area of Don Forces (Voisko Donskoe), red — nonresident inhabitants.

This flag, with medium blue bottom stripe, is listed under number 94 at the chart Flags of Aspirant Peoples [eba94] as: «Don Cossacks - South-East Russia».

Several sources report the ratio of this as 2:3 the same that other flags: naval ensign, navy chief command, and ataman’s standard.

10 November 1991: Union of Cossacks of region of Don in Stavropol was adopted resolution about recognition of this Union as succeder of Don republic, and also about re-creation of Don republic into Russian Federation. Flag proposed is probably horizontal blue-yellow-red. This projects never obtained recognition.
