Presentation of Compagnie Générale Transméditerranéenne

The Compagnie Générale Transméditerranéenne, locally nicknamed Transmed, was founded in March 1969. It was a wholl-owned subsidiary of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Most of the fleet of the company came from the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte, absorbed by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique in 1967.

The goal of the Transmed was a cargo and passenger service in the western Mediterranean basin, specifically to Corsica (by state contract), Algeria and Tunisia (in agreement with their respective government).

In spring 1976, the Société Nationale Maritime Corse-Méditerranée (SNCM) was created as the immediate successor of the Transmed. The Compagnie Générale Transatlantique was merged in 1977 with the Messageries Maritimes to form the Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM).
