Initially Compagnie Générale Maritime (1851), later Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (1861), the company operated, inter alia, the famous 'Normandie' and 'France' liners. It was merged in 1977 with Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes to constitute Compagnie Générale Maritime.
