History of Société Nationale Maritime Corse-Méditerranée

The Société Nationale Maritime Corse-Méditerranée (SNCM) was founded in 1976 to replace the Compagnie Générale Transméditerranéenne.

The main duty of the SNCM was a mission of public service to provide a "territorial continuity" between Corsica and mainland. The SNCM signed with the French state a 25-year convention.
On 1 January 2002, a new conventon was signed by the SNCM and the Compagnie Méridionale de Navigation. This was a convention of delegation of public service signed for five years with the Territorial Collectivity of Corsica (local administration) and the Transport Office of Corsica, approved by the Territorial Assembly of Corsica (local parliament).

The SNCM operates seven passenger ferries under the commercial name Ferryterranée, four cargo passenger ferries, two high speed ships (NGV) and one super high speed ship. The current flagship of the SNCM is MS Napoléon-Bonaparte.

House flag of Société Nationale Maritime Corse-Méditerranée

The house flag of Société Nationale Maritime Corse-Méditerranée is horizontally divided blue-white-blue with the red letters SNCM in the white stripe. The logotype of the SNCM was derived from the then logo of the SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer), the national railway company), which partially owned the SNCM.
