The department is named after the river Drôme (110 km), tributary of Rhône.
The yellow triangle represents the simplified map of the departement (in fact it has two unequal panhandles). The blue line symbolizes the Rhône river.

The flag of the General Council displayed in Bourg-de-Péage has at hoist a white band about as large as the blue one.
