Velký Šariš, the administrative centre of former Šariš county
is situated north of Presov below Šariš castle. Its history is linked with
the history of Šariš castle. It is supported by documents of the13th
century. It was, however, built one century earlier. Since the 19th century
there is a modern steam mill (1853) and since 1967 a well-known brewery.
In the small town the poet Jozef Tomasik-Dumin lived between the
wars. The castle has been in ruins since 1687. Its captain in the 16th
century was Juraj Werhner, the autor of the paper "About miracle water
of Hungary". The roman Catholic Church of St. James goes back to the second
half of the 13th century. The Gothic chapel is from the middle of the 14th
century and the chapel in the cemetery is late 17th century. Šariš
castle is a natural protected area.(Info from this

Veľky Šariš is 5 km northwest of Prešov in eastern Slovakia. On a hill
(550 m) above the place, in the middle of a copse stand the ruins of a
medieval castle as old as the 11th century and once the seat of the district
administration of Šariš.
