Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.shipmate.nl/flags.htm
adopted 22 Dec 2005; design: Drs. J.F. van Heijningen
Description:
"Four stripes with heights proportioned 2:3:3:2, yellow, blue, white,
black, the central ones wavy, with figurines of 1/2 flagheight, consisting
of a merman and a mermaid, facing, holding hands countercharged."
The flag will be used on representative occasions. It was approved by the municipal council on 22 Dec 2005.
Once upon a time the fishermen of Westerschouwen caught a mermaid in
their nets. Her merman besaught them with tears flowing from his eyes to
release her. The fishermen laughed at him and wouldn't let her go. Thereupon
the merman said:
"Westerschouwen,
"het zal U berouwen".
(Westerschouwen: you will rue this!)
And he was right. The sea swallowed Westerschouwen several times and
took thousands of innocent lives.
