Blokzijl [former municipality]

Blokzijl is a small town, formerly along the Zuiderzee, but after the "inpoldering" of the Noordoostpolder it is c. 10 km off the IJsselmeercoast. At the end of the Middle Ages it was an important harbour. On the building of the "Oude Waag" was written:
"Blokzijl heeft meer schepen in getal
Dan Overijssel heel en al"
(Blokzijl has a larger number of ships
Than Overijssel in total.)
It is now a sleepy town with c. 1500 inhabitants in the new municipality of Steenwijkerland.
Sierksma's Nederlands Vlaggenboek (1962) [sie62] has an unofficial flag for Blokzijl: four horizontal stripes black - yellow - white - blue. That flag was used by the municipal authorities as the official flag.

The Blokzijl website has the colors blue - white - yellow - black; this is confirmed in Derkwillem Visser's "Gemeentevlaggen en wapens Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, 2001", which adds that Prince Maurits (1585-1625) granted the "forteresse" of Blokzijl the right to use a flag (possibly on 28 Jan 1609, when Prince Maurits granted by letter the CoA to Blokzijl).
