Lochem municipality
Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 19.411; area: 128,80 km². Settlements:
Lochem (seat), Barchem, Laren.
Lochem is in north central Gelderland. City rights since 1233. In the
16th century the inhabitants had the right to take hay from hay-carts.
Thus a Trojan haycart with Spanish soldiers was discovered during the 80
years war. It's the town of the famous Dutch poet H. C. Staring.
In 1971 the present municipality of Lochem was formed by the merger
of the former municipalities of Laren and
Lochem.
The old unofficial flag was horizontally YB; the new one, adopted 29
Apr 1974, is a variation thereof, inspired by the municipal CoA
(yellow lion on blue field), derived from the Gelre CoA.
