Zaltbommel was already known in 850 AD as 'Bomela'; named Zaltbommel
because of the trade in salt and to be distinguished from Maasbommel (see
Appeltern). City rights in 1229, one of the most beautiful cities of Gelderland.
Birthplace of the Philips brothers, who started the radio company.
On 14 Nov 2002 the new municipal flag was adopted.
The first unofficial flag was horizontal BW, derived from the CoA,
according to Sierksma, Nederlands Vlaggenboek, 1962. -
The new flag is the CoA. The swords may be from the old iron-eater
Maarten van Rossum, who was born here and made the East of the Netherlands
rather unsafe in the early 16th century.
