Exmorra village
Exmorra's (Frisian: Eksmoarre) population in 1958: 430, with the hamlets
Bonjeterp (60) and Bruindeer (15). It's a "terp" (mound) village
west of the cosmopolitan agglomeration of Bolsward, near the former Makkumer
lake. Here several projects to fend off water-invasions were executed,
like the Exmorrahem polder, the Exmorrahemdike (now dug up), and the Exmorsterwal
(another sleeping dike).
Nickname: "Krante plakkers" (newspaper stickers), "Smoarfretters"
(fateaters) - They were accused of doing nothing and filling their bellies
with the fat left after the bacon was cooked. <fortunately no nickname
is mentioned connecting these honorable people with Gomorra - I've asked
a good citizen of Morra (Dongeradeel) if
it had anything to do with that Biblical place, and survived (after a close
escape :-).
Exmorra CoA: red, charged with five golden cloverleaves, placed 3:2,
with a silver base, charged with a red waterlilyleaf.
