Smallingerland (Frisian: Smellingerlân) is a municipality in
southeast Friesland with the important center of Drachten.
The flag is derived from the municipal CoA and refers to game and woods
(formerly) abundantly present.
In southeast Friesland the rich were hunting and the poor were digging
peat under miserable conditions. It gave rise to a quite radical social
movement, not reflected in flags AFAIK
