[Flag of Equatorial Guinea] [National flag and ensign] 2:3~

by Zeljko Heimer 23 October 2001
Flag adopted 21 August 1979, coat of arms adopted 21 August 1979.

Description of the flag

Horizontal tricolor of green over white over red, with blue triangle at the hoist, and the coat of arms in the white stripe. The arms are gray with silk cotton tree. Above are six yellow sixpoited stars representing mainland and islands. Under shield is a motto: UNIDAD - PAZ - JUSTICIA. The flag was addopted 12-OCT-1968, when the state gained the independance. During the dictatorship of Francisco Nguema (1972-79) the emblem in flag was changed, but the original 1968 flag is restored since.

The coat of arms in the above image is adapted from Corel Clipart collection. The construction details of the flag in Album 2000 [pay00] are given as (2+2+2):9~, but I think that it is noting more then Armand saying that the three stripes are of the same width. I believe that we can't with certenity answer these questions:

  • shade of blue triangle. Armand du Payrat in Album approximates it to Pantone 312c which is rather light. [vdv00] and [smi82] (being two sources that I have rather handy) make the blue shade quite dark, like what's called the navy blue.
  • Size ("height") of the triangle. If I am not much mistaken, the Album makes it equal to a stripe height (1/3 of hoist). [vdv00] is quite similar, I think, while [smi82] and some other sources (from memory, don't have any by hand) make the triangle much bigger - isoscales?
  • Position of the coat of arms. In the middle of flag or in the middle from the triangle to to fly?

The [pay00] gives the flag without the coat of arms as "Unofficial Variant" for civil flag and ensign.

The civil flag was (unofficially?) without the arms in the middle throughout the period since 1968, but its status is unclear.
