Landesflagge

Horizontal black-dark red bicolor. In use by 1848. Officially adopted 1896. Continued in use [after 1918] until 1935. Readopted as Landesflagge of the State of Württemberg-Hohenzollern c.1947. Abolished as a result of the merger into Baden-Württemberg 25 April 1952.

Norman Martin, May 1998

Ströhl 1897 [stl97] suggests that the colours of the scroll on the coat-of-arms are the origin of the black-red Landesfarben of Württemberg which replaced the black-yellow ones used until the early 19th century. In turn, the colours of the scroll come from the black of the Württemberg antlers and the Swabian lions in the arms and from the red of the Swabian lions' right forepaws —barely visible on the arms— also according to Ströhl 1897 [stl97].

To be more precise, Ströhl 1897 [stl97] says that most probably the blood-red right forepaws of the lions on the Swabian arms originated both the colour of the scroll and that of the Landesfarben.

Ströhl 1897 [stl97] also says that until the adoption of the then (1897) current arms, on 30th December 1817, black and yellow were used as Landesfarben. I wonder whether that implies that from that date the black-dark red colours were used instead.

The Swabian lion acting as dexter supporter should look more like black, rather than grey/silver. According to Ströhl 1897 [stl97] this arms was adopted on 30th December 1817.

Ströhl 1897 [stl97] says that in the 1817 grant there was no mention of a distinct colour for the lions' right forepaws in the official blazon, even if the accompanying image the right forepaw of the lion (dexter) supporter was shown red. Apart from that the "red right forepaw(s)" were rarely if ever used on the state arms.

The image is from one of the heraldic works by Baron von Gaisberg-Schöckingen. The Swabian lions' right forepaws are red in the original arms, however they were not shown in a different colour in the state arms of Württemberg, only in the family arms of the Württemberg-Teck and Württemberg-Urach branches. Therefore they appear in the royal standard of Queen Mary of Great Britain as she was a duchess of Teck.
