The arms were granted in 1961 and show the lion of the Counts of Leinigen and the imperial eagle. Landau got city rights in the early 13th century from Count Emich IV von Leiningen-Landeck. Already at the end of the century the city had become an imperial city. The oldest seal of the city, which dates from 1283, also showed the lion and the bordure.

In 1907 the city was granted arms with the lion and a red chief. This was based on a 16th century manuscript. The colours were white and blue, and were taken from the colours of Bavaria. In 1961 the historical colours were used and the importance of the city was emphasised with the eagle.
