The county Märkischer Kreis was created in 1975 by joining the former counties of Iserlohn and Lüdenscheid, and the county-free city of Iserlohn. Lüdenscheid county was named Altena county before 1969 when the (formerly county-free) city of Lüdenscheid was integrated into it. (...) The former county of Altena/Lüdenscheid used a white-red flag with the arms, according to the information given to Falko Schmidt by the county officials. (...) The arms of Altena show the checkered bar and lion (image based on Stadler 1964-1972), based on the arms of historical territories [see under Märkischer Kreis County].
