From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The old arms were granted on September 27, 1962. The arms are mainly based on the arms of the Counts of Burgau, who owned the largest part of the county until 1301, when it became an Austrian possession. In 1805 the area became part of Bavaria and the Bavarian colours are used for the base of the shield. The base shows the Donau [Danube] river, which runs through the district.Literature: Stadler 1964-1972.
