From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The arms were granted on June 18, 1965 and confirmed on November 20, 1972.The arms show in the dexter half the arms of the Markgraves of Nuremberg from the dynasty of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The eagle is the arms of Brandenburg. The sinister half shows the arms of the city of Nuremberg. Both the Markgraves and the city of Nuremberg had many possessions in the county.
The lower part of the arms shows symbols for agriculture and industry.
Literature: Stadler 1964-1972.
