Broumov town flag

[Broumov town flag] by Blas Delgado Ortiz,  8 Nov 2001

I just received from Ales Krizan the description of the flag of Broumov city, Nachod district:
"The flag granted on 5 March 1996.
Description: Blue field, white swan, yellow beaked and armed., in upper corner in the flay a six- pointed yellow star. Ratio 2:3."
Jarig Bakker, 7 Nov 2001

The picture is O.K: The six pointed yellow star is in uppper fly corner. The star may be a little near to the swan, but from aesthetic point of view only .

The settlement arose in 1171 on an old mercantile road from Bohemia to Kladsko. To protect this pathway the Bohemian prince founded on the highest point (in that area) a wooden castle. In 1213 the King of Bohemia, Přemysl Otakar I, gave the ”Broumov Corner” (Broumovský výběľek – a geographical  name) to the Benedectine order. The Monks cared about colonisation and cultivation of the land. For that reason immigrants from Flanders and Thuringia came to this land. Abbot Dluhomil (1217 – 36), but especially later Abbot Martin (1253 – 78) begun with colonisation. In the 13th century the village became a settlement with  many craftsmen (especially of cloth makers from Flanders), and in 1256 a market town. - Some Flamands and Valonians were among first settlers in Brno too.

Local monastery is depicted in background of the text. It worth to see it! Now it is administered from Benedictine Arch – Abbey Břevnov (in Prague). After 1945 German monks were made to leave the country and had newly settled the monastery Rohr in Bavaria – see also this webpage. BTW – German name of Broumov is Braunau – that´s why Hindenburg called Hitler ”der böhmische Kapral”/ ”the Bohemian Corporal”. .)

Broumov town CoA

[Broumov town CoA] image from this website, reported by Jarig Bakker, 7 Nov 2001

In Broumov Coat of Arms you can see Azure a Swan passant Argent (beaked and armed Or), behind its head (in sinister chief) a sixpointed Mullet Or. That swan, swimming on  a lake and the evening star was the first thing the German settlers of Broumov saw climbing the rock, called now Hvězda (Star).
