Jairo Alonso Méndez Méndez, 31 March and 19 November 2004

The town of Montelibano was originally settled toward the end of the 19th Cerntury by immigrants from what is now Lebanon but was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Being Maronite Roman Catholics, they felt that they would be able to lead more rewarding and spiritually fulfilled lives in a Catholic country. As many south American countries were actively seeking immigrants at this time, largely but not excclusively from Europe, Colombia could be counted in this number. The new immigrants, conscious of their traditions, decided that the name of their new settlement would always remind them of their roots; hence the named it Montelibano, or 'Mount Lebanon.'
