Boleslav Mastai and Marie-Louise d’Otrange Mastai amassed
what I understand was the world’s biggest collection of Stars
and Stripes, including, among other things, the only twenty-star
example.
They believed that in the nineteenth century a flag made when the
country was at war had the canton resting on a full-length seventh
(red) stripe, which they called the War Stripe; the rest of us
just ignore this, and enjoy what I think is the finest published
collection of American flags, in amazing variety, including great
star patterns, random patterns, flags with inscriptions, stars
arranged to form letters, and much else.

Matheson was a key figure in Canada’s divisive flag debate
of 1964, and his book gives a detailed insider’s view of how
Canada got its current National Flag. I read the book in paper form
about a year ago, and I really enjoyed it. I heartily recommend it
to everybody interested in flags.
