Presentation of Ellezelles

The municipality of Ellezelles (5,600 inhabitants; 4,473 ha) is located in the arrondissement of Ath.
The current municipality was formed in 1976 by merging the three former municipalities of Ellezelles, Wodecq and La Hamaide. The three villages forming the municipality differ by their topography: Ellezelles is a gros bourg, i.e., a compact large village (or small town); Wodecq is a village made of houses grouped around its church; and La Hamaide a village-rue, i.e. a village made of houses aligned on both sides across a main street (rue).

Industrialization started in Ellezelles in 1870 when weaving mills were built. However, agriculture was the main activity in the area, with cash crops such as tobacco, chicory and medicinal plants.
"Green" tourism has developed since Ellezelles is part of the Natural Park of the Hills Country (Parc Naturel du Pays des Collines, PNPC). The most interesting monuments of the municipality are small chapels, locally called potales.

Like every respectable Belgian city, Ellezelles has its brewery, called La Quintine (opened in 1993).

Municipal flag of Ellezelles

The flag of Ellezelles is a simplified banner of the municipal arms. On these arms, the flag field (gyronny of eight red and yellow pieces) is charged with a red lozenge fimbriated in yellow in each red piece, and a yellow escutcheon with three red horizontal stripes is placed in the middle of the arms.

The flag was adopted on 6 January 1992.
