The municipality of Hooglede was founded on 10 March 1977 by the merger of the former municipalities of Hooglede and Gits. In ancient times, the name of the city was Ledda. This name refers to its location on a steep slope, because ledda means a high slope. Gits is from Giddis, Gidisa. -isa refers to a watercourse and Gid comes from the personal name Giddo or Gillo.

The flag of Hooglede is yellow with a red saltire charged with four white rings, with in the center a blue shield with a yellow St. Quirinus. It was adopted on 14 June 1988.
The official description of the municipal arms is: Azure a St. Quirinus or, holding an oval
shield of the same, charged with nine tourteaux of the shield, of which
one in the center and eight placed in orle.
These arms refer to the pilgrimage tradition of the XVIIth till
the beginning of the XXth century to the relics of St. Quirinus, which
are kept in the St. Amands' church in Hooglede. Hence the walk around the
churchwalls.
