Historical background

The arms on this flag look almost, but not entirely like that of the medieval county Mark. Seeing as said county contained a territory named Hohenlimburg, could there be a connection?

In Lummen was the castle De Burg, which dates from before 1203; it became a possession of the family van der Marck in 1350 (Gids van Vlaanderen, 1995)

The old (left) arms were granted on June 27, 1907. The arms are quartered and show in the first and fourth quarter the arms of the Counts of Arenberg and in the second and third the arms of the Counts of the Mark.
In the early 15th century Willem van der Mark acquired the estate of Lummen. The Counts of Arenberg acquired the estate through marriage in the 18th century and remained in possession of Lummen until 1793.

The oldest seals of the council date from 1447 and 1451 and both show a shield with the arms of the Counts of the Mark.

Willem II Lumey van der Marck (1542-1578) was a famous/notorious leader of the Watergeuzen, he was a greatgrandson of Willem van der Marck (d. 1485), the "Boar of the Ardennes", an equally fierce opponent of the Burgundian power in the Netherlands.
