Wemmel (14,000 inhabitants) is located in the arrondissement of Halle-Vilvoorde.
The flag is: Or, a cross Gules, in the canton a bird Sable. Proportions are 2:3.
The bird is probably the merlette of the municipal coat of arms, descriebd as follows:
"The arms were granted on May 21, 1873 and are based on the oldest seals of Wemmel. The oldest seal dates from 1388, and, as all later seals, shows a cross with a small crow in the upper right corner. The blackbird later developed into a merle. The arms itself are derived from the arms of the Van Kraainem family, Lords of Wemmel in the 14th century. The crow (Kraai) was a canting symbol."
The flag was adopted on 14 June 1988.
