Presentation of Geel

Geel is located in the arrondissement of Turnhout.
The city is famous for having housing lunatics in semi-liberty for centuries. People with slight mental disorders are accomodated by local families, under medical control, and are allowed to have a quasi-normal life. This system full of tolerance is rather unique in the world and has proven to be quite successful.

Description of the flag

The flag has seven vertical stripes yellow-red (like the flag of Mortsel) and nine black ermin spots in canton.

The flag was adopted by Municipal decree 26 June 1983 and confirmed by Ministerial decision 21 November 1989.
