AVCGA Flag/Jack

Unlike what the name might suggest to some, the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association is not an auxiliary force of the full-time Coast Guard (there being no coast guard in Australia) but rather an association similar to the British Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

It is clear from the rank flags that at least its symbols were inspired by the US coast guards. Beyond the use of an eagle-like bird as their emblem, ranks of officers are denoted by the use of bar(s), leaf, an eagle and stars (unlike the Australian navy which use the British system.)

The AVCGA flag (or jack) image is based on a drawing in the members handbook. It does not contain pantone values for the colours but describes the blue as being as the one in the Australian national flag.
Marc Pasquin, 23 December 2004

[The flag is blue, with an AVCGA badge in the centre. The badge features a yellow eagle holding an anchor, surrounded by five white five-pointed stars in the shape of the southern cross with the words "AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEER COAST GUARD" interspersed in white, all within a yellow circular rope.]

There are two main rival volunteer organizations: The Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association, and the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol These organizations have no law enforcement powers, but are essentially auxiliary Search and Rescue (SAR) services.

Burgees of rank

Flotilla Burgee

[Flotilla burgee] by Marc Pasquin, 17 Mar 2005

A blue bifurcated flag with the logo off centered to the hoist and white large letters and number in the middle. I guess the letters and number would change depending on where the boat is based (Victorian Flotilla 1 ?).

A white triangle with a white and blue version of the logo toward the hoist. For those who don't have the right to a fly a rank flag one would assume.
