Montenegro (People's Republic of, Narodna Republika Crna Gora, until 1963; then Socialist Republic, Socijalistička Republika Crna Gora, until 1991) used a red blue-white-flag with a star, officially adopted on 31 December 1946. The Montenegrin tricolour dates from the 1880s, and is based on the Serbian tricolour.

On a grey rock rising from sea, the Negoš mausoleum, surrounded with golden laurel wreath with ribbon in national tricolour. Above golden outlined red star.
The Negoš mausoleum in Četinje, built by Mestrović on mount Lovčen, is one of the symbols of the Montenegrine sovereignty. Dynasty Petrović-Negoš was ruling Montenegro, and brought western ideas of statehood and culture. Several members of the family were also writers, the most notable being Petar Petrović-Negoš.

The emblem was probably adopted in the same time as the flag, on 31 December 1946, and it is supposed that it was designed by Đorđe Andrejević-Kun, also supposed to be the designer of all Yugoslav emblems of that time.
