On 11 February 1959 was created the Federation of South Arabian Emirates, composed of :

• on creation on 11 February 1959
  • Emirate of Beihan (Bayhani dynasty)
  • Emirate of Dhala (Amiri dynasty)
  • Sultanate of Audhali
  • Sultanate of Fadhli
  • Sultanate of Lower Yafa
  • Territory of Upper Awlaki (with the tribal territory of Nissiyin)
• from October 1959
  • Sultanate of Lahej (Abdali dynasty)
  • Sultanate of Lower Awlaki (with the tribal territory of Ba Kazim)
• in February 1960

On 4 April 1962 the Federation was enlarged and renamed Federation of South Arabia. It had 17 members :

Description of the flag

Come the 1950s and a burgeoning of Arab nationalist sentiment in the colony and protectorate, the British tried to co-opt the local rulers into a conservative Federation of South Arabia. Aden Colony later became also a state of the federation. The native states all had quite distinctive flags.
The Federation of South Arabia flag was an almost square horizontal tricolour of black, green and ultramarine blue, with the three main stripes being separated by two narrow yellow fimbriations, and with a white crescent and star over all in the centre.
