History

The United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries (known for short as the U.S. Fish Commission) was established in 1871. It began operating its first research vessel, the Albatross, in 1882. It was transferred to the newly established Department of Commerce and Labor and renamed the Bureau of Fisheries in 1903. In 1939 it was transferred to the Department of the Interior and merged with the Bureau of Biological Survey (previously part of the Department of Agriculture) to form the Fish and Wildlife Service.
