Flag Description

In the heart point, the seal of the City of Elizabeth with six (6) five pointed stars, each star representing a ward; three stars to the left and three stars to the right symmetrically placed near the seal. Two ribbons, one near the top paralleling the flag bearing the legend, "The City of Elizabeth, New Jersey," equally distant from either side, and one near the bottom equally distant from either side, paralleling the flag and bearing the legend "Founded 1664, First Capital of New Jersey, Incorporated 1855." The words "First Capital of New Jersey" to be in the center of the ribbon.

The field is light blue, letters and stars dark blue in heraldry, signifying loyalty, the keynote of our city's motto "Loyal Devoir." Ribbons in white or silver, used interchangeably in heraldry, signifying peace and sincerity.

A descriptive design of the Municipal Flag was included in a report adopted by the City Council of Elizabeth at its meeting held December 27, 1934; it was amended by resolution adopted February 10, 1964. In 1934, the flag contained thirteen (13) stars representing the thirteen (13) wards then in effect. Elizabeth now operates under a new charter and form of government. The amendment of February 10, 1964 provides for the use of six (6) stars in the flag to represent the six (6) wards into which the city is presently sub-divided.
