The City of Hagerstown in Maryland has population of 36,687 and land area of 10.66 sq. miles. It is in Washington county. The original flag of the City is on display in the Council Chamber at the City Hall. The resolution adopting this flag as the official City flag describes it as follows:
"The flag is rectangular in shape, divided into two parts by a line drawn diagonally from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. The upper portion, next to the staff, is purest white, symbolic of truth and purity. The lower portion is a bright, clear blue, symbolic of our Blue Ridge Mountains and our clear, running streams. Upon the white field is a blue figure of "Little Heiskel", guardian symbol of our City, who stands watch over all. Emblazoned upon the field of blue is a white wheel, symbolic of industry and our " Hub City" within which is encircled a white sheaf of wheat, emblematic of agriculture and the fair valley in which in live."The resolution was adopted on June 30, 1955. I found the flag here: http://www.hagerstownmd.org/publicInfo/Hagerstown_flag.asp.
According to the Hagerstown Herald-Mail, the city of Hagerstown, MD first
entertained the idea of a city flag in December 1954 when planning a city
exhibit to be displayed at its sister city, Wessel Germany. The flag was adopted
in 1955 and created from a composite of designs submitted in a flag contest.
