PLYMPTON TOWN FLAG INSTALLED AT STATE HOUSEDov Gutterman, 4 January 2003
(Boston, MA) Senator Therese Murray (D-Plymouth) and Representative Thomas J. O'Brien (D-Kingston) are pleased to announce that the Town of Plympton's flag was installed at the State House in a ceremony on Tuesday, June 26, 2001. The flag joins the Commonwealth's collection of flags from cities and towns across the Commonwealth in the State House's Great Hall.
Up until a few months ago the Town of Plympton did not have an official Town Flag. The Board of Selectman and local citizens worked together to plan and design a flag that would reflect the town and its history. The final design has a depiction of Deborah Sampson, the Official Heroine of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on it. Deborah Sampson was born in Plympton on December 17, 1760 and went on to serve in the American Revolution, disguised as a man, for more than a year.
"When I first came into office I took it upon myself to make sure that all six of my towns' flags were represented in the State House's Great Hall," said Representative O'Brien. "I very much enjoyed working with the Town of Plympton, including the Board of Selectmen, to assist them with the design and creation of this wonderful flag."
More than seventy Plympton residents made the trip up to the State House for the historic occasion. Attending the ceremony was Senator Murray, Representative O'Brien, Rick Springer, Chairman, Board of Selectmen, D. Howard Randall, Selectman, Nancy Butler, Town Clerk, other town officials, residents and local scout troops. Also in attendance was Plympton's oldest resident Mrs. Elisabeth W. Dennet.
"I am so pleased that the Town of Plympton flag is finally included amongst the many great communities represented in the Hall of Flags," stated Senator Therese Murray (D-Plymouth). "For a small community, the ceremony was well-represented and this reflects the spirit and pride of Plympton residents."
"Years from now when these residents come in to the State House they will be able to look up and see the Plympton Flag hanging in the Great Hall and remember that they were there for this historic occasion," said Representative O'Brien.
