The flag and arms of Šoštanj are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Šoštanj, adopted on 20 April 1995 and published in the official local gazette Uradni list občine Šoštanj in 1995.
The Decision was amended by Decision Odlok o spremembah in dopolnitvah Odloka o grbu in zastavi Občine Šoštanj adopted on 17 September 2001 and published in the official local gazette Uradni list občine Šoštanj, 06/2001, on 19 September 2001. It seems that the only change is the use of "white" in the amended description of the symbols instead of "silver" used in the 1995 Decision.

The flag is rectangular, in ratio 2:1 (vertical), vertically divided red-white, with the coat of arms placed in the second fourth from the top of the flag. The height of the coat of arms is half the width of the flag. Its overall ratio is 5 x 4.
The images shown above were made after a vectorized document forwarded by the municipal administration of Šoštanj.

Coat of arms of Šoštanj - Image by Željko Heimer, 15 June 2006

The coat of arms of Šoštanj can be blazoned as:
Per pale or a semi-eagle sable langued beaked and membered gules displayed issuant from sinister and argent on a mount vert three heart-shaped stones gules one on two.

The artistic rendition of the eagle (and overall impression) reminds very much on Austrian flags.

The image shown above was made after a vectorized document forwarded by the municipal administration of Šoštanj.
