The municipality of Šentilj was formed in 1995. It is named after its patron saint Elias (Ilija). In Šentilj is one of the largest, if not the largest, border-crossings to Slovenia.
Željko Heimer, 20 March 2000
The flag and arms of Šentilj are prescribed by decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Šentilj, adopted on 14 March 1996 and published in the official local gazette Medobčinski uradni list Stajerske in Koroske regije, 5/1996.
The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.
The flag is horizontal, in ratio 2:5, green with a thin yellow line
delimiting a green square field at hoist that contains the triple
cross from the coat of arms.
Stanič [stj05] writes that the dividing line is prescribed not to be wider
then 2% of the flag length. However, this line is described as being
white - while the drawing by Stanič, as well as those received from the flag designer, clearly show it as yellow.

Quoting Stanič:
The interesting history of Šentilj is shown also in its coat of arms. The symbol atop of the Šentilj church belfry is quite unusual for a Catholic region: it forms a patriarchal cross with three crossbars standing atop of a recumbent and somewhat stylized crescent, that was added in year 1839 as a memory to year 1532 when the Turks plundered and damaged the church. This symbol symbolizes the victory of Christianity over Islam. Already the shape of the cross and its addition provide to the coat of arms the necessary recognizabilty and includes it among the heraldic curiosities of Slovenia. Its impression is increased also by the green colour of the historical country of Styria.
The coat of arms is set in a shield of late Gothic style of Sanit shape. In the green shield is set a complete heraldic charge composed of three conjoined parts: a golden disk 3.5 times narrower than the shield serves as a base for the twice as wide crescent whose inner edge is formed by six semicircular indentations. From the crescent's middle rises a silver patriarchal cross, its crossbars being four times thinner than the base disk diameter. The points of the crescent, the top of the cross and the ends of the crossbars are ended with golden balls 2.5 times smaller than the base disk.
