Jarig Bakker, 8 May 2001

One might find it strange, that the symbol on the flag has a mural crown. The emblem is resembling the symbols of heraldry in that it has a shield. In heraldry, the mural crown is the sign of rank for a town or city.

Today, all Swedish policemen are employed by the state. During the first half of the 20th Century, however, most towns and cities in Sweden had municipal police forces. This emblem is probably dating back to that time, which also seems probable judging from the style of the emblem. In the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th Century, the mural crown was a popular attribute in symbols for associations which had some connection to a town or city, in spite of the fact that this crown should only be used by the municipal authorities of the town.
