About the flag

Halland was conquered from Denmark in 1658 and was granted its arms in 1660 at the time of the funeral of King Charles X Gustavus. No seal or arms are known for Halland from the Danish times. There are several theories as from were the lion was taken, one is that it was taken from the arms of Bengt Algotsson, who was duke of Halland and Finland when Halland was Swedish for a period in the 14th Century, another that it was adopted as there were several lions in the royal arms of Charles X Gustavus, the conqueror of the province. A revised grant of the provincial arms were made on the same day it was granted to the county of Halland, i.e. on 7 February 1941. The flag is a banner of the arms.
