Satu Mare (in Hungarian Szatmárnémeti) is a city in Satu Mare (in Hungarian Szatmár) County of Romania closed to the Hungarian border on the banks of the Someş/Szamos River. Satu Mare is the capital of the county and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Szatmár. The commune contains two settlements: City of Satu Mare/Szatmárnémeti and Sătmărel village. The city has got 130.584 inhabitants (41,3% Hungarians, 1992 census). Neighbouring communities are: Dorolţ/Pusztadaróc, Vetiş/Vetés, Doba, Ardud/Erdöd, Viile Satu Mare/Szatmárhegy, Păuleşti/Szatmárpálfalva, Odoreu/Szatmárudvari, Botiz/Batiz, Micula/Mikola and Lazuri/Lázári communities.
At the time of the Hungarian Conquest, the Hungarians besieged the entrenchment which became later Castle of Szatmár. Queen Gizella, wife of King Saint Stephen I (1000-1038) settled a new settlement with German King's Hunters - Németi. Szatmár and Németi were devastated by the Mongols in 1241-1242. King Béla IV resettled the twin cities. The two cities were in Szatmár County of the Kingdom of Hungary. 1605-1606, 1621-1629, 1645-1648 the cities with the county were parts of the Principality of Transylvania. In 1714 after the Prince Rákóczi's War of Independence the Castle of Szatmár was destroyed. In 1715 Szatmár and Németi were united as a Free Royal City.
Inhabitants in 1910: 34.892; 33.094 (94,8%) Hungarian, 986 (2,8%) Rumanian, 629 (1,8%) German and 183 (0,5%) other by mother tongue, 13.418 (38,5%) Calvinist, 7.194 (20,6%) Jew, 6.998 (20,1%) Roman Catholic, 6.977 (20,0%) Greek Catholic and 305 (0,9%) other by religion. From 1919/1920 (Romanian occupation / Treaty of Trianon) to 1940 (Second Decision in Vienna) part of the Kingdom of Romania. 1940-1944 part of Hungary. The Treaty of Paris reallocated it to Romania.The settlement was a city 1952-1960 in Baia Mare Region, 1960-1968 in Maramureş Region and from 1968 is in Satu Mare County.
