The arrow stands for an «improvement in all orders: economical, social and political». By pointing up, instead of right or left, the arrow defines Christian Democratic Parties as center parties.

How much has this been fading away in the post Cold War world? As far as I can feel, parties naming themselves “Christian Democratic” have been straying away in their discourse to one of those two trends, and all but hiding the other away. (With the possible exception of Germany’s CDU.)
