About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a background quarterly (meaning town rank) of green and yellow. The coat of arms is argent a chestnut twig fruited or and leaved vert and on a a bordure sable nine snowflakes (or flowers?) argent. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE MACEDO DE CAVALEIROS".

The toponym means "Horsemen’s (something)" — no trace of any on the arms. On the other hand, this town lies indeed in a region where chestnut trees are grown in great numbers, and where you can have as much snow as possible in Portugal. Both charges (snow flakes and chestnuts) and disposition (bordure) are almost unique in portuguese municipal heraldry (no idea about communal heraldry, though).
