It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms
centered on a background gyronny (meaning city
rank) of purple and white. The coat of arms is or, a rose gules between
two ogival escuteons azure, charged with 11 bezants argent in 3+2+3+2+1,
all entangled in two vines, one fruited or and the other purple, both
leaved vert. Mural crown argent with five visible towers
(city rank) and white scroll reading in black
upper case letters "CIDADE DO CARTAXO".

Cartaxo municipality had 22 180 inhabitants in 1990, and it is
divided in 8 communes, covering 158 km2. It belongs to the
Santarém District and to the old province of
Ribatejo.
