The arms are based on the 14th century seal of the city, but they have
changed considerable. The two crescents were originally two, slightly bend,
pales. Their origin is not known, most likely they are derived from the
arms of some family. On a 15th century seal the pales are changed into
crescents and the shield is now divided. Since the late 16th century the
candle appears instead of the division line. The candle is canting, 鈍ieca
= candle.
