Some municipalities have tried to find a way to emphasize the importance of things maritime without having to resort to charging the shield with another boat. Måsøy is one such municipality. For its arms and flag it uses a gaff, a traditional tool consisting of a piece of wood with a metal hook at one end. The tool is used to secure the catch and haul it on board.
