About the flag

This municipality has two official names; one in Norwegian, Kautokeino, and one is Saami, Guovdageainnu (current spelling). In official use the Saami name is mentioned first. It is situated in Finnmark county.

Kautokeino/Guovdageainnu municipality is situated in the mountain plateau of inner Finnmark and is an area dominated by the Saami people and their culture. This can also be seen in the flag of Kautokeino / Guovdageainnu municipality: A lavvo, a Saami tent, in yellow on a blue field. The flag was adopted by Royal resolution of 4 September 1987. The lavvo, somewhat similar to the tepee of native North Americans, is still in use by reindeer herders who follow their herds around according to season and availability of food for the animals.

Blazon

Official blazon in Norwegian: "I blått en gul lavvo."

Blazoned in English: "Azure a lavvo or."
English blazon by Željko Heimer, 30 July 2002

"Lavvo" is a Sami word, I believe, so I leave it as such. Something like "Sami tent" might stand as well.
