About the flag

Granvin municipality is situated in Hordaland county.

Granvin is one of the few municipalities in Hordaland that took a cultural object for its flag. As we have seen, motives associated with industry or nature are favoured. The flag of Granvin is a yellow fiddle set diagonally on a field of green, the neck pointing towards the upper fly corner. The design, made by Øyvind Kvamme, reflects the rich traditions of folk music and symbolizes an active and creative community. The fiddle is a simplified representation of the richly decorated Hardanger fiddle. This fiddle, used to play folk dance music, has two sets or layers of four strings and has a very characteristic sound. The lower set of 'sympathetic strings' is not directly touched by the fiddler, but vibrates when the other strings are played. The flag was approved 13 May 1988.
