The Yearbook of the "Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad" - Wie, Wat, Waar 1941
has two pages with burgees.
Roei en Zeilvereniging "Poseidon", Amsterdam (Row- and Sailing Club),
not to be confused with the numerous Poseidon shipping companies. A red-white-red
burgee converging in the fly, with in the center a blue diamond with in
saltire a white rowing oar and a trident.
This club was founded in 1907 and has c. 200 members.

In 1939 I joined the rowing club Poseidon in Amsterdam and was part
of a junior 4 with coxwain. Early in 194l Poseidon, like all other
Jewish sportsclubs in Amterdam, was raided by the Nazi occupiers, who arrested
every one they could find. All prisoners were transported in due course
to Mauthausen, where as rumored the experiments of poison gases on healthy
human specimens resulted in the demise of one and all. A name sake and
half cousin of mine Koert (aka. Kurt) Herzstein was caught and died in
Mauthausen 6.9.1941. Through sheer luck I avoided the raid and thanks to
the efforts of Mevrouw Wijsmuller was able to escape the Netherlands and
reached Spain in order to board a ship to Havana, Cuba.

The Proteus-Eretes combination is a student rowing club of the Delft
(ZH) technical university. Image of the flag and description are on this
website.
