Bleskensgraaf en Hofwegen former municipality

Bleskensgraaf en Hofwegen is a former municipality, since 1986 part of the municipality of Graafstroom. In 1968 it had 1350 inhabitants along the mighty Alblas river in the Alblasserwaard. From Bleskensgraaf the Alblas has been canalized to become the "Graafstroom", after which Bleskensgraaf was named.
Flag: three horizontal stripes yellow - blue - yellow with a red hoist-triangle reaching into flagcenter, charged with a yellow
half-lion.
The lion in red is derived from that part of the municipal arms representing Bleskensgraaf, while the yellow-blue can be assumed as symbolizing the lordship of Hofwegen (Hofwegen was a separate municipality, until it merged in 1855 with Bleskensgraaf); The blue stripe equally represents the Alblas-river.
Flagdesigns with five colors, lilies and triangles were refused, after which the High Council of Nobility was consulted and three nearly equal designs were made. The ultimate choice was between combinations of VBV, YBY, and BYB - YBY won!
Adopted 22 Dec 1976 by municipal resolution.
