Goes municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 36.285; area: 102,13 km². Settlements: Goes (seat), 's-Heer Arendskerke, 's-Heer Hendrikskinderen, Kattendijke, Kloetinge, Oud-Sabbinge, Wilhelminadorp, Wolphaartsdijk. On 1 Jan 1970 the municipalities of Goes, ’s-Heer Arendskerke, Kattendijke, Kloetinge en Wolphaartsdijk merged to form the new municipality of Goes.

Despite the fact that Goes is the Hanzestad it was never a member of the Hanseatic League. The popular etymology of the name Goes is that it stands for a "goes" = goose. The Zeeuwen (inhabitants of Zeeland) tend to pronounce the *g* as an *h*, hence "Ganzenstad" becomes "Hanzestad".
The flag of Goes city, now of Goes municipality, consists of thirteen equally wide horizontal stripes of red and white. The first known image is in the "Chronyk van Mattheus Smallegange", according to Sierksma's Nederlands Vlaggenboek (1962). [sie62]

's Heer Arendskerke had a flag, two equally wide horizontal stripes yellow and red. This flag was unofficial. The colors have been chosen arbitrarily, without any connection to the municipal arms.

There is B/W image on this webpage, and a flag on this webpage. Description: four equally wide horizontal stripes red - yellow - blue - white, with in the canton the former municipal flag. The flag is bordered by a stripe with blocks yellow - red - white - blue, except the hoist. proportions 9:11. I assume that this is the present village flag.
